What this tool does

It draws whole numbers from the range you set. Both ends belong to the range: from 1 to 6 means that 1 and 6 can come up. Every number of the range has the same chance in every draw.

The range may reach from -1,000,000,000 to 1,000,000,000, and one request may ask for up to 1,000 numbers.

How to use it

  1. Enter the lowest and the highest number.
  2. Enter how many numbers you want.
  3. Tick “No repeats” if every number may appear once at most, as in a lottery or when you hand out places.
  4. Tick “Sort from lowest to highest” if the order of drawing does not matter.
  5. Select “Generate numbers”. Each further click makes a new, independent draw.

How the result is made

The browser delivers random values from 0 to 4,294,967,295. The tool needs a value from a range of a different size and gets it without favouring any number: values above the largest multiple of the range size are thrown away and drawn again. For the range 1 to 100, only the top 96 of more than four billion values are thrown away, so this almost never happens, but it makes the result exactly even.

With repeats allowed, every number is drawn on its own. Without repeats and with a small range, the tool shuffles the numbers of the range and takes the first ones. With a large range it draws numbers one by one and draws again when a number was already taken.

Worked example

For six numbers from 1 to 49 without repeats, enter 1, 49 and 6 and tick “No repeats” and the sorting. A result may be 3, 17, 22, 31, 40, 48. Each of the 49 numbers is among the six with a chance of 6 in 49, which is about 12%.

If you ask for 50 numbers from 1 to 49 without repeats, the tool answers that the range holds only 49 different numbers. It names the three ways out: ask for fewer numbers, widen the range or allow repeats.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting different numbers without ticking “No repeats”. With repeats allowed, five numbers from 1 to 10 contain a repeat more often than not.
  • Drawing again until the result pleases. The first draw is the fair one; decide before you draw what the numbers mean.
  • Reading a pattern into the result. Runs like 4, 5, 6 are as likely as any other three numbers.
  • Entering decimals. The tool draws whole numbers only and says so when it meets 2.5.

Frequently asked questions

Are the numbers truly random?
They come from the cryptographic generator of your browser, which is seeded with unpredictable data from the operating system. Nobody, including this site, can predict or influence the next number.
What happens when lowest and highest number are the same?
Then the range holds one number, and that number is the result. The tool allows this and adds a note, because it is usually a typing mistake.
Can the tool draw decimals?
No, only whole numbers. For a number with two decimal places, draw a whole number from a range that is a hundred times larger and divide it by 100 yourself.
Is 0 or a negative number possible?
Yes. The range may start below zero, for example from -10 to 10. That range holds 21 numbers, because 0 counts as well.
Does the site keep my results?
No. Results exist on your screen only. Use “Copy result” if you need them later.
